Have you ever wanted to see how newspapers are made? Well, today we’ll get to read about it, Pillager Area Charter School got to tour The Brainerd Dispatch. On our tour we explored different parts of the company, the first place we went was the journalist section. Renae showed us how they connect with people and understand what they like and don’t like. On social media such as twitter as well as they’re website. Which they can track where people click off on their videos as well as which article is being most read. They can also see who and where people are coming from. At one point they had a blackout and couldn't use computers or print newspapers. The tech guy who works there had an idea for when they have a blackout, they decided to get generators. Although the generators can’t print the newspaper they support the computers and lights. When they need to print the papers they send the send the article over to Detroit Lakes and that company prints it off. When they’re newspaper printer is working they have a long and interesting process on how they make their newspapers. Not only do they print they’re papers they print other newspaper companies like Staples World. The first step of the process is to send the article to a machine which will print it onto a metal sheet where they want the ink to stick is blue and the rest is grey. After making the metal temple, which is recycled, they bring it to the printing machine. They’ll put the metal sheet in a slot where water and ink are pressed onto it. Water is attracted to the grey and ink is attracted to the blue parts; once the ink is on the metal sheet it is pressed onto paper.after that they will cut the newspapers and put ads in them if needed. One of those rolls of papers is about 7.66 miles and it weighs 981 pounds, they keep over a hundred of paper rolls in the building. After seeing how the newspapers were made we headed out to the accountant section where people call about subscriptions or payments as well as connect with people on ads to put in their newspaper. Overall, we learned a lot visiting the Brainerd Dispatch. It was a great experience as well as interesting to learn about the newspaper company and how they make newspapers.

We have been busy the past couple of weeks working with the kindergarteners at Pillager Elementary School! We finished up the last few classes today, so they are all set with their Mother's Day gifts! We planted marigolds last month, and the past two week we transplanted them into pots! It was a fun activity where we were able to share some lessons about the environment, seeds, planting and growing!
After working with kindergarteners from Pillager Elementary School for the past few months, our students will be hosting a field trip at the charter school! Five different kindergarten classes will be joining us later this month for lunch, fun and tomato plant transplanting! We are truly looking forward to the kids joining us!
This session's English project involves working with kindergarteners by reading books and teaching environmental education. Yesterday, April 5th, three students traveled to Pillager Elementary School to work with Ms. Ivers' kindergarten class. They read The Lorax and discussed the importance of trees along with the environmental impact of losing trees. When the lesson was complete, the students helped the kindergarteners plant "truffula tree" (marigold) seeds. Ms. Ivers' class will be nurturing these seeds in order to send them home with the kids for Mother's Day gifts!
Greg and six students took a trip to the state capital on Tuesday and Wednesday this week! They spoke with two of our legislators in regards to alternative education and charter schools. Neither of them were aware they had charter and alternative schools in their district. The students presented some data they've been collecting in math from Minnesota alternative schools, and they have found 83% of alternative students feel safe in their schools. The legislators were very interested in learning the studsents' individual career paths. It was a great experience for all!
