To conclude the second session at Pillager Area Charter School (PACS), eight students visited the Audubon Center of the North Woods (ACNW) for a three day field experience. Located in Sandstone, Minnesota, the ACNW is an environmental learning center dedicated to teaching K-12 students about the natural environment, and is the charter school authorizer of PACS.
Students earned the opportunity to go on the trip based on their community involvement, service learning, and project completion; all points of emphasis in the second session at PACS. While at ACNW, the students continued to focus on the session theme of “community” by participating in team building games and challenges, as well as exploring the ecological definition of community through classes and activities. Students learned the importance of working together, trust, and taking risks on the ropes course, and how helpful, encouraging words can be on the climbing wall. In the “classroom”, which was outside as often as it was indoors, students got to meet a number of education animals like “Spike” the porcupine and “Dakota” the red-tailed hawk and learn how these animals fit into their environmental niches. Students also explored wolf ecology and the relationships between predators and prey animals. By: Spencer Garness
