The art group completed their Crossed Canoes Barn Quilt from the Arts & Culture session! They will be hanging it above the overhang on the front of the Science building soon. Be sure to keep an eye out for it, as it's the first one in Pillager!
The students in Greg's afternoon project class have been working on an industrial arts project since the beginning of the session. This session's project is a Ruben's Tube, which is a visual representation of standing sound waves in flames.
The students were involved in every step of the process from planning, creating a supply list, shopping and constructing. In the past week, they made adjustments to the Ruben's Tub, and today it was lit for the first time! In October one of our teachers, Spencer, took some of us to St. Paul on a field study for the end of our “Minnesota” themed session. We were able to visit our State Capital and the Minnesota History Center and learned a lot about Minnesota and things about America. We also visited the James J. Hill House, and it was cool seeing how much one man could have an effect on Minnesota. He was incredibly rich and had a really cool house that cost over eleven million dollars to build.
We stayed at Afton State Park in cabins, so we were able to take nature walks and take in the beautiful scenery. Since we are an environmental school, that was really important to us. We also cooked food on a fire, which taught us we can make a meal outside. Overall, it was a great experience, and I’m glad I was able to go. -Brandon Johnson Thursday, August 31st from 12 pm - 4 pm! Meet the teachers, tour the property, and have some lunch!
This session's theme deals with the outdoors! Teachers brought in a variety of camping and fishing gear, leading sessions on how to enjoy the outdoors. Students rotated through three different "classes" ranging from outdoor gear, fishing and tackle, and packs and tents. The group will end the session by heading into the outdoors for a camping adventure at the end of May!
Our greenhouse is in full swing! The Grand Opening for the Plant Sale will be Friday, May 19th. The greenhouse will be open from 9:00am-3:00pm Monday through Friday until sold out! We have been cultivating various types of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, beans and flowers. Veggies are $3.00 for a large plant and $2.00 for a small plant, while flowers are 2 for $3.00. We hope to see you soon! Any questions, please feel free to call 218-746-3875.
During the week of March 13th-17th, eleven students had the wonderful opportunity to embark on a week long field study to Chicago where we stayed at a new hotel, Fieldhouse Jones. Pillager Area Charter School is an experiential and environmental school, and each session we have a focused theme for the students. The Session Four theme was Citizenship, and the students, along with two chaperones, spent time in the city of Chicago learning about citizenship and what it means. It was an incredible experience to accompany these students on the trip, as it was enlightening to see the big city with them and through their eyes. Below is a collection of articles written by the students about their adventures through the windy city.
